John Conklin was born on March 14, 1756 in a part of Frederick County Virginia which is now Jefferson County, West Virginia. His father was Jacob Conklin. He married Miriam Burr on June 24, 1793 in Frederick County. Moses Hoge performed the ceremony. Her parents were Peter Burr, Jr. and Mary Stewart. A 1798 court record indicates that they had at least one son, Jacob Conklin, born about 1794. Due to the wording of the court document, it would appear that Miriam died before 1798. The first store in Mad River Township, Champaign County, Ohio was kept by John Conklin, who dealt in dry goods and groceries.
